Spanish Education
As a bilingual individual, I have learned that being able to express myself and understand others in two languages is essential in a state where diversity is a prominent feature. As a matter of fact, being a Spanish native speaker was what motivated me to become a teacher. As a child, I felt that many of my teachers did not understand me and they acted like I was not smart enough for them to invest their time on me. However, when they took there time to explain to me material, they saw that I was capable of acquiring knowledge. I know that this is still a problem in California since our population is largely Hispanic. I want to be able to help those students that have, not only a language barrier, but any type of learning barrier as well. I want to show them that there are educators that believe in their capacities. After all, I believe all children can learn if they are given the resources and motivation.
Even though I was born a Spanish native speaker, for a long time I was not able to express myself in standard Spanish. However, after attending California Sate University Dominguez Hills I am able to speak and write academic Spanish. To demonstrate my ability of writing and expressing myself in Spanish, I have chosen as my artifact a cultural interview I conducted in Spanish 351, Contemporary Hispanic Culture: Spanish-Speaking America. In my essay, I demonstrate my ability to conduct a research utilizing primary sources. My research paper also highlights my ability to formulate a thesis and organize information in a compelling manner. And even though no Spanish standards exist, my essay follows the English Language Arts writing standards for K-12.
