Emphasis on English Language Arts (ELA) is crucial in order to help our students become literate and to be able to succeed in all other academic areas. Henceforth, in order to prepare my students for higher education and the global market, I must possess an in depth knowledge of ELA and English language development in the strands of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. In addition to teaching children how to decode, phonics, grammar, and vocabulary, I must also coach them to analyze, argue, and conduct research utilizing literature and informational texts. Teaching these tasks is particularly important since the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) puts an emphasis on informational text. I must also possess the knowledge of recognizing and providing children who require extra resources such as children with learning disabilities and English Language Learners. Finally, in this ever growing society, where communications and technology are profoundly valued, I must allow my students to collaborate and apply technology in their studies.
Through my college education, I have taken many courses that have made me knowledgeable in English Language Arts. For example, my English 487 (Introduction to Second Language Teaching) class taught me how children acquire language, including those who are not English native speakers and children with learning disabilities, as well to some techniques to approach language acquisition. Both English 487 and English 350 (Advanced Grammar and Composition) trained me to conduct research, critique and evaluate my own work and the work of others, and infer from informational text in addition to English writing structure and conventions.
My artifacts include an argumentative essay from English 350 and a morphology project from English 487. In my argumentative essay, I conducted research and utilized informational texts and media as evidence to present and critique the manner in which Wal-Mart has had an arbitrary effect on small businesses and the exploitation of its employees. My morphology project demonstrates my knowledge in decoding, phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Both of these assignments are aligned with grades K-5 ELA standards and my argumentative essay is aligned with grades K-12 ELA standards. With the insight I have gained through my college career, my goal is to train my students to become critical readers and persuasive writers.
