History-Social Science
In order to teach history-social science in California, I must possess a thorough understanding of past, present, and future events pertaining to local, California, and U.S. History as well as World History. In addition, I must be knowledgeable and incorporate other subject matter in subjects such as geography, economics, political science, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and the humanities into my teachings in order to enhance students' understanding of historical events. This includes enlightening students about national heroes, and how we obtain our resources such as food and water. Being prepared for teaching history-social science also means modeling and instructing children to respect and embrace global cultures as well as exhibiting exemplar ethical conduct and civic responsibility. Ultimately, my objective is to prepare children for higher education by encouraging children to conduct research, analyze, question, and refer to primary and secondary sources in order to state their arguments and understand continuity and change in our societies.
My History courses have prepared me to teach content matter inn these subjects. Some of these courses such as LBS 375, The California Experience, and History 121, Ancient World Civilizations, have trained me to become a critical thinker and considerate of diversity. My history classes have also taught me how to correlate historical events and interpret the impact of these in our society and the world. Most importantly, they have taught me different pedagogical techniques and studying skills that can keep children engaged.
My artifact is a Document Based Question from my LBS 375 class: The California Experience. In this assignment, I conducted an investigation, analyzed, and presented my argument utilizing primary and secondary sources covering the impact of Spanish colonization on the Amerindians and the ecology of California. In my essay, I demonstrate my ability to construct a well-written essay including my skills to formulate a thesis statement and cite evidence to support my opinions. This assignment aligns with the history-social science standards for grades 3, 4, and 5 and the writing standards for grades K-12. I hope that in the future I can help my students to become analytical thinkers, informed writers, and social activists.
